DTS
Digital Theater Sound, developed by NuOptix, Inc. On the 35mm filmprint, an
optical time code is placed in between the optical soundtrackand the picture
frame. This optical time code is read, and used to synchronizethe film with
the digital audio, which is played back from a compact disc.3:1 compression
of the digital sound using DTS's Coherent Acoustic Codingalgorithm enables 6
audio channels to fit on a two-channel CD. Six audiochannels are output
(Left, Right, Center, Left Surround, Right Surround, and Bass). If the
digital sound path fails, the system switches to theanalog soundtrack as a
backup. Debut film was Jurassic Park, 1993.
SDDS
Sony Dynamic Digital Sound, developed by Sony, Inc.. The digital
soundinformation is encoded directly on the film print, placed on both
edgesof the film, outside the sprocket holes. 8 channels of audio can be
recordedwith 5:1 compression of the digital sound, using Sony's encoding
algorithmcalled ATRAC. Eight channels are output (Left, Left Center, Center,
RightCenter, Right, Left Surround, Right Surround, and Bass). If the
digitalsound path fails, the system switches to the analog soundtrack as a
backup. Debut film was Last Action Hero, 1993.
Dolby Digital
Also referred to as SR·D, developed by Dolby Laboratories, Inc.The digital
sound information is encoded directly on the film print, placedin between
the sprocket holes on the same side as the optical soundtrack. To fit 6 audio
channels in this space, 10:1 compression of the digitalsound is used, using
Dolby Labs encoding algorithm called AC-3. Six channelsare output (Left,
Right, Center, Left Surround, Right Surround, and Bass). If the digital sound
path fails, the system switches to the analog soundtrackas a backup. Debut
film was Batman Returns, 1992.
